PaperJam. This September!

Exploded View announces PaperJam, a month-long arts show and series of events at the Great Falls Discovery Center, inspired by paper and the local paper-making industry. These events represent a partnership between the arts performance group Exploded View, the Great Falls Discovery Center, and Montague’s cultural development initiative, RiverCulture.

PaperJam Art Exhibit: Dozens of regional artists have contributed to this art exhibit curated by Exploded View, and have interpreted the theme of Paper in diverse ways: political, personal, historical, material, among others. Open to the public September 2 through September 29 in the Great Hall at the Center.

"On a Roll: The Story of Paper in Turners Falls": Discovery Center interpreters Janel Nockleby and Sheila Damkoehler have put together an exciting historical display and gathered related artifacts on the history of paper making in Turners Falls.  Located in the Great Hall.

Sunday, September 2: Sunday Movie Matinee: Dynamite, Whiskey, & Wood, 2 pm
Join us for a showing of the movie, Dynamite, Whiskey, & Wood: Connecticut River Log Drives 1870-1915, by Ed Klekowski, Elizabeth Wilda, and Libby Klekowski.

Saturday, September 8: Paper Making with Sheila Damkoehler, 10:30am-noon. 

Sunday, September 9: Artist Reception for PaperJam Exhibit
Exploded View Performance of “Deadlines”, 2-4pm
“Paper death typewriter heartbeat free speech cigar box ghost on a train." Exploded View is a dynamic group of women artists based in Franklin County developing original work, creating in collaboration and across art forms. Members are Trish Crapo, Edite Cunhã, Candace Curran, Nina Rossi and Samantha Wood.

Saturday, September 15: Paper Marbling with Sheila Damkoehler, 10:30am-noon.

Sunday, September 16: PoetryJam: Open Mic , 4-5:30pm.

Friday, September 21: Canal Drawdown and Powertown History Stroll, 5-7pm
Take a stroll back in time with local historian Ed Gregory, DCR’s Janel Nockleby, and Northfield Mountain’s Kim Noyes, to discover the rich industrial history along the Canalside Rail Trail during the annual draw down of the canal. Wear walking shoes and meet at the entrance of the Center for this FREE two mile walk on flat terrain. Register at: 800-859-2960.

Saturday, September 22: Book Making with Sheila Damkoehler, 10:30am-noon.

Sunday, September 23: Paper Trail Talk then Walk, 1pm
Exploring the history of four paper mills in Turners Falls with DCR staff and local historians. Presenters: Bill Wilson, Ed Gregory, Sheila Damkoehler, and Janel Nockleby. One hour to cover 4 paper mills in Turners Falls with Q&A, then a short walk afterwards, weather permitting.

Thursday, September 27: Artist Talk with Fafnir Adamites, 7pm
Fafnir Adamites is a Turners Falls artist using papermaking and other traditional craft processes to create sculptural works that act as monuments and reminders of trauma, intuition and the legacy of emotional turmoil inherited from past generations. She will talk about her recent work, the motivations behind her pieces and the importance of embedding meaning in the materials that she chooses.

Saturday, September 29: Origami with Mike Naughton, 1-2pm
Make your own paper creations.

Sunday, September 30: Rotation Book Exhibition, noon-2pm
This event is at LOOT, 62 Avenue A
The Rotation Book Project is a year-long collaboration, involving 12 creative individuals working on 12 pages each in 12 different books. Books will be on display to handle and participants will be available to answer questions.
